AREA RUGS ON HARD SURFACES, choosing the right one

Choosing the best area rug for your space can seem daunting, but if you follow a few steps the process can go much smoother for you.

We like to tell people to think of an area rug as artwork for your floor.  Most people leave this choice till last, picking wall color, furniture and accessories, but we recommend thinking of this first.  You can choose paint color from the rug, throw pillows, paintings and accessories.  Your area rug should be your starting point when designing and decoration your space.  

First rule, your area rug should be a minimum or 6 inches to no more than 2 ft away from the wall.  Taking into consideration of the different uses, shapes and design preferences of your space.

Less is more in transitional spaces or entrances that open to the other rooms, width should either match the door space or be a few inches less, not too big, not too short.  If you choose a round rug in a large foyer, center it under a light fixture.  In hallways, extend the carpet the full length to fill the space, leaving even space along the ends for balance.  If placing furniture in the hallways, leave it off the rug.  "No half on, no half off."  Says Mahmud Jafri of Dover Rug and Home.

We feel the area rug should be used a focal point, going back to the beginning of this, choose your rug first.  Choose a rug that allows all your furniture to sit on top.  Extending beyond the coffee table and at least under the first set of legs of your furniture.   You don't want a rug that is too small for the space, you can pick two rugs to create two sitting areas in your room.

​Some people to decide to choose s rug that just placed in front of the couch.  This rug should run the same width or even longer than the couch.  Placing the rug at an angle will create a much more interesting look.  You rug should anchor the room, not over take it!

If choosing a rug with a bold pattern (large flowers, abstract design, layers of colors or images) on a small rug it can make the room feel larger, but if you plan to place furniture on it we recommend not covering up the design, you want to be able to see the full design.

Centering your furniture over the rug in the dinning room with a rug that is the same shape as your table works well.  If you have the space allow a large enough rug for when chairs are pulled away from table that they still remain on the area rug.  

When choosing a rug the most important factor is you and your.  When looking for a rug ask as many questions as possible.
